Timothy Ash: It's Bush's Fault

By Todd Anthony

Noted Leftist Timothy Ash from the Guardian spins the same tired line in the Los Angeles Times today.

Here's the crux of his article: rather than assign blame where blame is due (with the Iraqi people for failing to step and take control of their country), he chides President Bush and his administration for essentially creating 1.) a humanitarian crisis; 2.) MORE terrorists.

Let's examine a few of Ash's points:

“President Bush says he's determined to give the commanding general in Iraq, David Petraeus, the troop levels he asks for when he reports back in September, and the White House may hold the line for now against a Democrat-controlled Congress.”

That’s good; it’s important to listen to generals and commanders on the ground rather than heed advice from the armchair commanders in Congress. Career politicians like Harry Reid and John Murtha have no business stating what the current situation is in Iraq.

“(T)he most outspoken protagonist of hanging in there to win in Iraq, John McCain, has seen his campaign nosedive.”

That’s an interesting, Left take on McCain’s floundering campaign; or perhaps his lack of success could be attributed to the glut of consultants and his stance on the failed comprehensive immigration reform bill.

“In a poll for CNN, 54% said the United States' action in Iraq was not morally justified. In one for CBS, 51% endorsed the assessment — shared by most of the experts — that U.S. involvement in Iraq was creating more, not fewer, terrorists hostile to the United States.”

Need I say more? The man quotes CNN and CBS, where the Mainstream Media as a leftist mouthpiece is completed embodied. Furthermore, he espouses the Leftist line that the United States, not the terrorists, responsible for senseless brutality that occurs in the Middle East everyday.

“The most probable consequence of rapid U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in its present condition is a further bloodbath, with even larger refugee flows and the effective dismemberment of the country. Already, about 2 million Iraqis have fled across the borders, and more than 2 million are internally displaced.”

Ash’s statement above seemed to be the only one that was factually correct. The ramifications of a withdrawal from Iraq more than likely would dire, and devastating.

“Besides the effective destruction of the Iraqi state, these include the revitalizing of militant Islamism and enhancement of the international appeal of the Al Qaeda brand; the eruption, for the first time in modern history, of internecine war between Sunni and Shiite, ‘a trend that reverberates in other states of mixed confessional composition’; the alienation of most sectors of Turkish politics from the West and the stimulation of authoritarian nationalism there; the strengthening of a nuclear-hungry Iran; and a new regional rivalry pitting the Islamic Republic of Iran and its allies, including Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas, against Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.”

Yet folks, this is what the Democrats are willing to accept, just to appease the far-left fringe groups! I cannot fathom something as irresponsible as vacating Iraq. More than likely, it will be the extremist groups that fill, VIOLENTLY, the power vacuum.

“The U.S. has probably not yet fully woken up to the appalling fact that, after a long period in which the first motto of its military was "no more Vietnams," it faces another Vietnam.”

The Left LOVES to call Iraq, “Bush’s Vietnam.” Yet, the Democrats blithely demand a complete withdrawal of American soldiers. Have they ever truly pondered the consequences?

Finally, Ash makes this statement, “Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo have done terrible damage to the U.S. reputation for being humane; this defeat will convince more people around the world that it is not even that powerful.”

The Left blames the Bush and Cheney administration for isolated incidents at Abu Ghraib. The atrocities were committed at a low-level, despite the Mainstream Media’s vain attempts to trace the incidents back to the Department of Defense and the White House.

Moreover, the Left paints the Guantanamo Bay detention facility as a mass torture house. First, what constitutes torture? The Left will tell you that waterboarding, for example, is torture. Technically, waterboarding is an advanced interrogation technique. The United States military does not rip off fingernails; apply electrical currents to genitals, or other abhorrent torture methods. Yet, the Left would have you believe that the Bush administration is on par with Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Stalin, Adi Amin, and Pol Pot.

The Democrats have painted the Bush administration as monsters. Furthermore, the Mainstream Media has waged an internecine campaign of seditious reporting to expose and embarrass the President.

How irresponsible…
