Al-Qaida leader Masri close to capture

Bad Guy In A Tee Shirt-Iraq's National Security Adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie shows a video grab of al-Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Ayyub al-Masri during a news conference in Baghdad October 1, 2006.
BAGHDAD- The Iraqi government said on Sunday that its security forces are close to capture or killing of the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq Abu Ayyub al-Masri.

"I can say we are very close to Abu Ayyub al-Masri and we say to him your days are numbered," said Iraqi National Security Advisor Muwaffaq al-Rubaie.

"My message to Iraqis in Ramadan is that it is so close, we will bring you the good news of Abu Ayyub al-Masri either killed or handcuffed to be brought before the Iraqi justice system," al-Rubaie told the news conference, in which a video tape of al-Masriteaching followers how to build a car bomb was shown.

The video tape showed al-Masri in a white T-shirt was talking to the camera as he explained how to compose a car bomb.

Rubaie said that the video was found in Youssifiyah, some 20 km south of Baghdad.

If this prediction comes true I'll celebrate this Ramadan! Go get him.

In the meantime: Defining Jihad- here is an interesting Muslim opinion piece called "The Irrelevance Of Jihad".

In the last few years, and particularly since 9/11, ``jihadism'' has become synonymous with ``terrorism'' and ``jihadists'' with ``terrorists''.

Consequently, many Muslim intellectuals and public figures have gone into a defensive mode, trying to point out that the greater jihad is the struggle inside oneself to do what is morally right while armed struggle is merely the lesser jihad, secondary to the struggle to control ones base instincts.

While these may be true, it is also the case that the greater jihad, since it does not occupy public space, is of little significance in the current global debate about the use of the term jihad and its offshoots ``jihadism'' and ``jihadists''.

The irrelevance of greater jihad in public life is obvious.

Jihad has been a political term from the early years of Islam, associated as it has been with the expansion of Muslim empires and justified by the argument that Muslims had the obligation to spread the word of God to humankind. The early Muslim empires were not particularly concerned about converting non-Muslim subjects to Islam and were, therefore, tolerant of religious diversity to a greater extent than their medieval counterparts in Christendom.

However, they often used the term jihad to justify territorial expansion usually undertaken for economic or strategic gain.

Use of religious terminology to provide a veneer for secular projects is not unique to Islam.

Expansionist wars, both of the universal and sectarian variety, conducted in the name of Christianity were usually far more ferocious and destructive of life and property than those undertaken in the name of Islam.

Muslim rulers at least did not kill infidels to save their souls.

They preferred taxing them to raise revenues for the state, one reason for their lukewarm attitude towards conversion of subject peoples to Islam.

Baghdad Under Curfew After Terror Nab

Bodyguard For Sunni Political Group Suspected Of Planning Massive Bombings

(CBS/AP) The Iraqi capital was quiet Saturday as a curfew imposed in fear of imminent attacks kept residents inside, but violence persisted in other areas of the country.

Gunmen killed Malik Jebbar, an Iraqi man who had been working as an interpreter for the U.S. military in an area about 60 miles south of Baghdad, police Capt. Muthana Khalid said.

Another person was killed in nearby Iskandariyah, 30 miles south of Baghdad, when a bomb exploded in the city center, Khalid said. Five others were injured in the blast.

In Tal Afar, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, police opened fire on a suspected car bomber. The vehicle detonated, killing two and wounding 30 others, police Lt. Nejim Abdullah said.

After U.S. troops detained a bodyguard for the leader of Iraq's biggest Sunni Arab political group on suspicion he was preparing massive suicide bombings inside the fortified Green Zone, fearful officials on Saturday enforced a total ban on movement in Baghdad.

Speaking on Al-Arabiya TV on Saturday morning, Interior Ministry official Hussein Ali Kemal said the move was to "prevent the security situation from deteriorating." He added, however, that the information was that there was a threat that an attack "might occur against places of worship and shopping centers during Ramadan."

Another Ramadan fireworks display thwarted, thank God. Here's a clip from CBS about the curfew. Note the "Bad News" tone of the report. Very little is said about the terror nab itself or that it is the reason for the curfew. And typically...no credit for the US troops!

Islamic Group Trumpets Car Dealership Pulling 'Jihad' Ad

"The Ohio chapter of CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, put out a press release on NewsWire about its success in getting a local car dealership not to run radio ads declaring a "jihad" on the car competition and "Fatwa Fridays."

Instead, will the dealership now run "Religion of Peace" Wednesdays?"

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) said today that proposed "jihad-themed" radio advertisements for a car dealer in that state will not be aired.
The ads reportedly would have proclaimed a "jihad" on the U.S. auto market and offered "Fatwa Fridays" with sales representatives in "burqas" giving free swords to children.

Meanwhile in Eurabia:

Third Night of Ramadan Rioting in Capital of Europe

It looks as if immigrants youths want to turn nightly rioting during the Islamic holy month of ramadan into an annual tradition. Around 8:30pm last night violence erupted again in Brussels, the capital of Europe. The riots centered on the Brussels Marollen quarter and the area near the Midi Train Station, where the international trains from London and Paris arrive. Youths threw stones at passing people and cars, windows of parked cars were smashed, bus shelters were demolished, cars were set ablaze, a youth club was arsoned and a shop was looted. Two molotov cocktails were thrown into St.Peter’s hospital, one of the main hospitals of central Brussels. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fires at the hospital, but youths managed to steal the keys of the fire engine.

During the month of ramadan Muslims are required to fast during the day and are only allowed to eat after sunset. As Esther pointed out “What should be noticed about the riots is that they start after sunset. Besides the fact that they start after dark, it also gives the rioters enough time to break their fast and enjoy the traditional family meal. Sunset is around 7:30pm.” Tuesday’s and Monday’s riots began around 8:30pm.

Yep...just like clockwork. CAIR victory statements and Ramadan riots. I guess they can be put on the list with death and taxes. (ie. The only thing for certain is death and taxes...)

Terrorists Add Innocents To Arsenal

BAGHDAD - Insurgents are now using unwitting kidnap victims as suicide bombers - seizing them, booby-trapping their cars without their knowledge, then releasing them only to blow up the vehicles by remote control, the Defense Ministry warned yesterday.

It was unclear from the Defense Ministry's statement whether the insurgents are using kidnap victims because they are having trouble finding recruits for suicide missions.

American officials have said that insurgents often tape or handcuff a suicide driver's hands to a car, or bind a foot to the accelerator pedal, to ensure that the bomber did not back out at the last minute.

The remains of such hands and feet have been found at blast sites.

I would call this "A Profile In Someone Else's courage".
