Although I was born in Uzbekistan we lived in Weinsheim Germany for two years in an apartment building not too much different than the photo here before finally coming to Ellis Island in December of 1949. I was almost 5 years old and spoke only German when I entered kindergarten in the New York City public school system (PS 153).
My first encounter with an "American" child was someone who made fun of the way I spoke. I didn't start to whine or cry about it, but became determined to be more American than anyone else. I would learn to read and write American English with a vengeance. I was born with the name Benzion. The proper pronunciation is bent-see-yun. When my teacher couldn't pronounce my name correctly she asked if I would like to be called Bernie. I agreed, happy with the idea that I had an 'American' name. I ran home and told my
Had the school system at that time been run by multiculturalists, I would probably have had no reason to learn English to the exclusion of anything else. I would have spent the next 57 years trying to get people to pronounce my given name correctly with my halting English. I would certainly be a failure like most people who have names like Shaniqwa or Umgawa and who were encouraged to think that any non-Western Culture is somehow worth the same as Western Civilization. It is not. Eastern religions, cultures, and civilizations may be interesting topics for academic studies, but certainly should not be considered as lifestyles for modern man. Indeed, female genital mutilation is still practiced by modern Africans, but it is a practice that is totally barbaric and without any redeeming medical value. So when I use the term "modern African" I mean a primitive, brutal, barely human culture.
