Saddam Hussein's Lynch Mob
A big web debate is on about whether the execution of Saddam Hussein was conducted by a lynch mob and was more sectarian violence than the exacting of justice.
The Australian's Washington correspondent Geoff Elliott has his take on it:
Look at Saddam's bloody life, not death: US
THE Bush administration was in damage control yesterday over the leaked Saddam Hussein execution video, saying the furore should not distract from the tyrant's bloody rule.
White House officials were trying to hide their embarrassment over the shocking footage of Saddam, as Iraqi officials arrested three men for mocking him minutes before his death and posting a video of it on the internet.
The scenes were described in Washington as more akin to a sectarian lynching than an example of justice being served. The unauthorised video threatens to turn the ousted dictator into a martyr.
It also emerged yesterday that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had direct approval from the White House to go ahead with the hanging.
US officials in Iraq initially blocked the push to kill Saddam within days of his appeal against the death sentence failing. "They had said it was impossible to execute Saddam so soon," a senior official said.
"The other option was to contact the White House to get permission."
Mr Maliki spoke to someone "very high up", telling them, "you need to give him to us", the official said.
President George W. Bush was not personally involved, said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel.
Iraqi authorities alleged yesterday that the two guards and one official under arrest were outsiders who had infiltrated the chamber and shouted insults while recording video on a mobile phone. The men were said to be from Sadr City, stronghold of the radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, whose name they chanted before Saddam's death.
Ok... so a couple of his enemies infiltrate the hanging. One needs only to remember what kind of man was hung to quickly get over it.
Just imagine if George W. Bush were in his place...what kind of people would invade and film his hanging?
Consider that these folks are on the same side.
