A Leader Of Al-Qaida-Linked Terror Group Arrested

BAGHDAD, Iraq A leader of Ansar al-Sunnah, a group linked to al-Qaida in Iraq that responsible for kidnappings and beheadings, has been captured by Iraqi and U.S. forces, the prime minister's office said Saturday.

Muntasir Hamoud Ileiwi al-Jubouri and two of his aides were arrested in Muqdadiyah, 90 kilometers (56 miles) northeast of Baghdad late Friday, Brig. Qassim al-Mussawi, spokesman for the General Command of the Armed Forces, told The Associated Press.

The Sunni militant group has claimed responsibility for numerous suicide attacks, the August 2004 execution of 12 Nepalese hostages and a December 2004 explosion at a U.S. military mess hall in Mosul that killed 22 people. Believed to have been an offshoot of another group, Ansar Al-Islam.

Ansar al-Sunna is part if the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of insurgent groups — including al-Qaida in Iraq — that was co-founded by the late Jordanian-born terrorist mastermind Abu Musab aal-Zarqawi.

Great! Now he'll get whats coming to him-- according to our kind and gentle policy that's three square meals (halil at that), five times for prayer and eight hours of sleep a day. Dang I don't even get that!

AllahPundit and Michelle Malkin point out that this is a bigger story than the Osama is dead rumor! I'd be nice but the rumor is unconfirmed. All the same, Carol at The Median Sib has an idea where he's headed!

Yemin arrests terrorist with connection to Osama

I'm not sure how important this is, Yemen is trying to make brownie points with the West. But it's worth noting.

YEMENI President Ali Abdallah Saleh announced Tuesday the arrest of a "terrorist" - allegedly linked to his main election rival and to Osama bin Laden - accused of plotting attacks against US interests.

"We have arrested a major terrorist who was planning operations against American installations and the Movenpick hotel," Mr Saleh said at a press conference on the eve of the presidential poll.

He said the suspect was a bodygard for Faisal bin Shamlan, his main challenger in Wednesday's presidential race.

Mr Saleh's private secretary Abdo Burji said the suspect, Hussein al-Jerdani, was arrested on Sunday and had close links with the al-Qaeda terror chief.

"He was a companion of Osama bin Laden and is the owner of a house rented to a cell which recently tried to launch attacks against oil installations in Yemen," Mr Burji said. source

After all, 'Yemeni security forces foiled twin suicide bombings against an oil refinery in Maarib, in the desert east of the capital Sanaa, and a Canadian-run terminal in the port of Dhabba on the Gulf of Aden', killing four terrorists and a security guard.

As-yet unsubstantiated reports have begun circulating on radical Arabic-language Internet chat forums that a major effort is now underway to bring the notorious Ansar al-Sunnah Army in Iraq officially under the umbrella of Al-Qaida's Mujahideen Shura Council (MSC). Active since at least mid-2003, Ansar al-Sunnah is one of the few Iraqi insurgent groups other than Zarqawi's Al-Qaida to openly advocate a pro-Bin Laden platform, to carry out suicide bombing attacks, and to distribute beheading videos on the Internet. According to the reports, discussions and "planning sessions" are currently being held in the restive western Al-Anbar province between representatives of Al-Qaida and Ansar al-Sunnah, with the ultimate objective of announcing their would-be merger during the coming month of Ramadan (approximately September 24 to October 23, 2006).
