BAGHDAD - Police said Wednesday that children were used in a weekend car bombing in which the driver gained permission to park in a busy shopping area after he pointed out that he was leaving his children in the back seat.
The account appeared to confirm one given Tuesday by a U.S. general. He said children were used in a Sunday bombing in northern Baghdad and labeled it a brutal new tactic put to use by insurgents to battle a five-week-old security crackdown in the capital.
Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero, deputy director for regional operations on the Joint Staff, said the vehicle used in the attack was waved through a U.S. military checkpoint because two children were visible in the back seat. He said it was the first reported use of children in a car bombing in Baghdad.
"Children in the back seat lowered suspicion, (so) we let it move through, they parked the vehicle, the adults run out and detonate it with the children in the back," Barbero told reporters in Washington. "The brutality and ruthless nature of this enemy hasn't changed."
A senior official in the Shaab police department said an investigation was opened after the owner of a shop in the market district said he and other residents initially told a man he could not park his car on the street but relented after seeing the children in the back seat.
Another police officer also said witnesses had reported seeing two children inside the car before it exploded. He said three other cases had been registered since last year in which women and children were used in parked car bombings, although they reportedly got out of the cars before those explosions.
The U.S. military has warned that insurgents are finding new ways to bypass stepped-up security to kill as many people as possible and spread panic. A series of bombings using toxic chlorine since Jan. 28 also raised concerns.
Insurgent tactics have evolved since the war started four years ago and youths often have been among their victims, but the use of children as decoys would signal a new level of ruthlessness in the fight for control of the capital.

Former minister Dr Mehmood Ahmad Ghazi said: “A suicide attack is clearly murder and its legality is further called into question by the fact that they occur in a Muslim state which is not occupied by infidels.”
Ahmed said that no final decree could be given on the issue, since a suicidal defence strategy was employed by the Pakistan Army at Chawinda to repel an Indian attack during the 1965 war, a strategy that was approved by the religious scholars of the time.
Determining the moral status of such suicide attacks is far too complex an issue to be sorted out by a mere ‘yes’ or ‘no’, he said: “After all, what can a Palestinian do when his parents and children have been killed, his house demolished and he has no means of earning a living any more?

EILAT, Israel–Israeli aircraft bombed a tunnel near the Gaza-Israel border early today in response to the first suicide attack inside the country in nine months, the military said.
The air strike came a day after a Palestinian bomber killed three Israelis at a bakery in the Red Sea resort town of Eilat. The two radical groups that claimed to have sent the suicide bomber said they were trying to end weeks of Palestinian infighting by taking aim at Israel instead.
Israel has observed a truce with the Palestinians in Gaza since late November. But today's air strike signalled the Eilat bombing had put that ceasefire in danger.
The Israeli army said militants planned to use the tunnel near Gaza's Karni crossing for an attack on Israel. No casualties were reported in the air strike.
Yesterday's bombing in Eilat was praised by the Palestinians' governing Hamas movement as legitimate resistance – a position sure to hurt efforts to end a crippling economic boycott imposed by the international community.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A man set off a bomb outside the Marriott Hotel in Pakistan‘s capital on Friday, killing himself and a guard and wounding at least seven other people in an apparent suicide attack, officials said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Police said another hotel guard was in critical condition.
Sherpao said the explosion was the work of "anti-state elements who want to create unrest," but declined to elaborate.
An intelligence official said at least seven people were wounded. He requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.
The hotel, often frequented by Islamabad‘s foreign community, was targeted in an October 2004 bombing that wounded several people. There were no reports of foreigners hurt in Friday‘s blast.
Security was already high in Islamabad and the rest of Pakistan amid fears of sectarian violence between Shiite and Sunni Muslims during Ashoura, a Shiite religious festival starting Monday.

64-year-old female suicide bomber attacks Israeli troops in Gaza
JEBALIYA, Gaza Strip (AP) — A 64-year-old Palestinian grandmother blew herself up near Israeli troops sweeping through northern Gaza on Thursday, wounding two soldiers, and eight other Palestinians were killed in a day of clashes and rocket fire.
The militant group Hamas, which is in charge of the Palestinian government, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack and identified the bomber as Fatma Omar An-Najar. Her relatives said she was 64 — by far the oldest of the more than 100 Palestinian suicide bombers who have targeted Israelis over the past six years.

What kind of men use women to hide behind or send teenaged girls to blow themselves up to fight against trained Soldiers? What kind of men would put their women in danger in order to protect themselves? It's inconceivable.In comments ahead of his expected meeting with Abbas, Haniyeh said Hamas wanted a unity government dedicated to "lifting the siege and ending the suffering of the Palestinian people".
But Hamas spokesmen have stressed it will never recognize Israel or join a government that did, rejecting one of the main conditions set by the "Quartet" of Middle East peace brokers for renewing direct aid to the Palestinian Authority.
