U.S. Hits Al Qaeda In Somalia

Well I was wrong...I guess Bush is willing to go after Al-Qaeda in Somalia after all.

MOGADISHU, Somalia A U.S. air strike hit targets in southern Somalia where Islamic militants were believed to be sheltering suspects in the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies, Somali officials and witnesses said Tuesday. Many people were reported killed.

Monday's attack was the first overt military action by the U.S. in Somalia since the 1990s and the legacy of a botched intervention — known as "Black Hawk Down" — that left 18 U.S. servicemen dead.

Helicopter gunships launched new attacks Tuesday near the scene of the U.S. air strike, although it was not clear if they were American or Ethiopian aircraft, and it was not known if there were any casualties.

U.S. warships have been seeking to capture al Qaeda members thought to be fleeing Somalia after Ethiopia invaded Dec. 24 in support of the government and drove the Islamic militia out of the capital and toward the Kenyan border.

The White House would not confirm the attack, nor would the Pentagon.

But a U.S. government official said at least one AC-130 gunship was used. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the operation's sensitivity.

AC-130 gunships have elaborate sensors that can go after targets day or night. They are operated by the Special Operations Command and have been used heavily against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

I commented yesterday that Somalia probably wouldn't get any help from the US given their track record with Black Hawk Down. I completely overlooked a possible air assualt against Al-Qaeda militants being chased out by Ethiopian ground troops. My bad...

A Tale of Two Rallies

We had a counter protest to the candlelight vigil by the Grannies for Peace Tuesday night at Union Square Park in Manhattan. Immediately they did what they could to block us by stepping in front of our banner and shouting us down. They were absolutely intolerant of our right to speak and had to be asked several times by the police to please stand back and to not interfere or to prevent us from protesting. It wasn't easy.

A very large group of people began to gather. As you would expect on 14th Street is very crowded, most were passersby stopping to watch and take pictures. But things started to get unruly when a few rabble rousers started whipping the giddy herd into a heightened state by jumping around and chanting 'no justice, no peace.' It doesn't take much, and it is amazing when you watch mob mentality sweeping through like a fire. They stayed for quite a while hurling invectives and low insults of every kind at one of our people who is a very brave woman who lost her brother in the World Trade Center. The things they said to her were disgraceful but she was undaunted.

After a while the situation began to degenerate and the police actually had to create a perimeter around us because the hecklers were getting too close and it was clear it would have gotten out of hand. How incredible is it that in the middle of New York City people are so intolerant of a different point of view, it brings them to violence. What made all of this worth it was when two US soldiers who happened to be passing by at different times walked through the angry throng to publicly thank us and shake hands. One of the members of our group was interviewed by the Associated Press in an article which appeared in the International Herald Tribune.

The photos that I took can be seen here.

Winning a War

What does it take to win a war? Certain adversaries in the past reached a point where they new winning was unattainable and threw themselves at the mercies of the victor. The modern enemy, Islamists, will never see victory as unattainable. They believe they have the might of allah behind them and will continue to fight as long as this idea exists. Unfortunately you can quash an idea by being nice. This idea must be shown to be unrealistic and fatal. In our present situation, nothing less then total unconditional surrender can be considered a victory. The enemy has a glimmer of hope that is not seen by the rest of us. It is an imaginary hope that cannot be eliminated by truth and fact of circumstances. The enemy is willing to kill and die for this ideology. We must be willing to do the same.

The enemy must be made to see that we will pull no punches when it comes to their defeat. Sitting down at tables and talking works to their advantage and displays our unwillingness to fight. The time for talk has passed. The next time we should be talking with any of these people is when they are signing a surrender document and we have gained control over their countries. In regards to terror organizations there should never be a sit-down. They should be eradicated from existence.

Whether we like it or not, war has become necessary. This war should be fought relentlessly and tirelessly. We should be constantly on the attack and taking no quarters. If provided quarters, they will maintain their ideology and use our internal sense of compassion against us. If you don't believe this take a look at the Guantanamo Bay prison and see how it has sent "civil rights" lawyers and activists into a tizzy. Don't take prisoners, the enemy doesn't. They even kill those that sympathize with them. Ignore the propaganda coming out of these quarters and strike hard with our own.

Pay no attention to the United Nations. It is because of this worthless organization we are in our present situation. Islamists and their sympathizers now have say in the General Assembly and they have allies on the Security Council. The Mafia has more discipline and respect than the United Nations does. What they say has no bearing on attaining world peace. Their job is to rape that advanced nations to line their own pockets with money and awards. The accolades and praise they receive are self induced. Get my country out of this organization and get this organization out of my country.

With us or against us. It IS that simple. Despite the propagandistic rhetoric, the United States is not imperialistic. We will trade and do business with just about anybody. We are paying the price for this mindset now. We have dealt with despots in the past. we have propped up and supported despots. All to protect our nation's assets and interests. This has created dissent against us as being hypocritical when it comes to freedom and human rights. Now we are attempting to reverse this and are being called hypocrites on the other side. President Bush cannot be held accountable for the actions of his predecessors. He has chosen his own path and on the surface it appears to be one of righteous indignation against these despots and what they have created. This is not something that can be accomplished overnight. It will take a generation or two to bring it to fruition. Do we have the patience?

Meanwhile we should be fighting. We should be fighting hard. we didn't differentiate between the German citizen and the Nazis during WWI. Why are we doing it now? Had the media during WWI been the same media during Vietnam or now, we would have lost that war and the Nazis would still rule Europe. We have enemies within. Some don't even realize they are aiding and abetting the enemy. Some deny the fact. Others don't care. America is not the cause of the all of the world's woes. We are doing our best to fix them. If a man gives you a hundred dollars to pay your utility bill and you spend it on alcohol, it is not the donors fault you have no electricity. The American Government and the American people have been more charitable than any government or people on the planet. Our thanks is airplanes crashed into buildings and our citizens beheaded or blown up. The charity should stop now. No money to enemies. No money or aid to country's who support our enemies. Provide support to a terror group and receive no aid during your next catastrophe. The American people deserve better for their efforts.

Defeat the enemy and eliminate his will to fight. This is the object of warfare. Kill as many of them as possible. No matter how advanced our technology becomes, "innocents" will die. Weapons are made by people which are imperfect which means our weapons are imperfect. War can be broken down to individual battles, one man killing another man. As crass as this sounds, this is the truth. Our present war is one for freedom. If you won't fight for another man's freedom you don't deserve the freedom you have.

There are many who claim that if Al-Quaeda was marching down mainstreet America they would fight. I say poppycock! If they aren't willing to fight now then they won't fight then. Anyway, by then it will be too late. If you aren't willing to fight for your own freedom, see the last sentence of the previous paragraph.

Islam preaches convert or die. Liberty requires one to fight or die. Would you rather feel guilty for killing some "innocents" or would you rather live as a slave to Islam. You make the choice.

U.S. strike kills Afghan Taliban leader

I'm DEAD.

Gone Daddy Gone!

KABUL, Afghanistan - A top Taliban military commander described as a close associate of Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar was killed in an airstrike this week close to the border with Pakistan, the U.S. military said Saturday. A Taliban spokesman denied the claim.

As usual...

Of Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani, who was killed Tuesday by a U.S. airstrike, U.S. military spokesman Col. Tom Collins noted Osmani's death as a "big loss" for the ultraconservative militia.

"There's no doubt that it will have an immediate impact on their ability to conduct attacks," Collins said. "But the Taliban is fairly adaptive. They'll put somebody else in that position and we'll go after that person, too."

And that is how the work gets done.

Al-Sadr loyalists take over Iraqi television station

Sadr City TV! Probably not as funny as Second City TV but...

BAGHDAD - Followers of the militant Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr took over state-run television Saturday to denounce the Iraqi government, label Sunnis "terrorists" and issue what appeared to many viewers as a call to arms.

The two-hour broadcast from a community gathering in the heart of the Shiite militia stronghold of Sadr City included three members of al-Sadr's parliamentary bloc, who took questions from outraged residents demanding revenge for a series of car bombings that killed some 200 people Thursday.

With Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki relegated to the sidelines, brazen Sunni-Shiite attacks continue unchecked despite a 24-hour curfew over Baghdad. Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia now controls wide swaths of the capital, his politicians are the backbone of the Cabinet, and his followers deeply entrenched in the Iraqi security forces. Sectarian violence has spun so rapidly out of control since the Sadr City blasts, however, that it's not clear whether even al-Sadr has the authority - or the will - to stop the cycle of bloodshed.

"This is live and, God willing, everyone will hear me: We are not interested in sidewalks, water services or anything else. We want safety," an unidentified Sadr City resident said as the televised crowd cheered. "We want the officials. They say there is no sectarian war. No, it is sectarian war, and that's the truth."

Al-Maliki's administration acknowledged it was powerless to interrupt the pro-Sadr program on the official Iraqiya channel, during which Sadr City residents shouted, "There is no government! There is no state!" Several speakers described neighborhoods and well-known Sunni politicians as "terrorists" and threatened them with reprisal.

"We'll obviously try to control them as much as we can, but when they (kill) more than 150 people in bombings, they have the right to speak," said Bassam al Husseini, one of Maliki's top advisers. "What are we going to do? We can't stop this. It's too hot right now."

Sounds promising doesn't it. Newsweek has a good article titled"The Sword of the Shia" which gives some insight about Moqtada al-Sadr:

One way to understand Moqtada al-Sadr is to think of him as a young Mafia don. He aims for respectability, and is willing to kill for it. Yet the extent of his power isn't obvious to the untrained eye. He has no standing army or police force, and the Mahdi Army gunmen he employs have no tanks or aircraft. You could mistake him—at your peril—for a common thug or gang leader. And if he or his people were to kill you for your ignorance, he wouldn't claim credit. But the message would be clear to those who understand the brutal language of the Iraqi Street.

American soldiers who patrol Sadr's turf in Baghdad understand. They can spot his men. "They look like they're pulling security," says First Lt. Robert Hartley, a 25-year-old who plays cat and mouse with the Mahdi Army in the Iraqi capital. The Sadrists use children and young men as lookouts. When GIs get out of their Humvees to patrol on foot, one of the watchers will fly a kite, or release a flock of pigeons. Some of Sadr's people have even infiltrated top ranks of the Iraqi police. Capt. Tom Kapla, 29, says he knows who they are: "They look at you, and you can tell they want to kill you."

This is where we find ourselves? As the -so far- one commentor on the Newsweek article points out, Al-Sadr was a nobody before the US invaded Iraq. Now that he is somebody he has to be dealt with. Where are the Russians when you need them? Perhaps we should convince THEM to stop killing their own and go after the REAL dangers of the world.

You are more likely to see that scenario played out on Mad TV and not in Moscow or Baghdad.

Insurgents gun down 21 in Iraqi village

We're only trying to help.

More Iraqi on Iraqi death...

BAGHDAD - Gunmen broke into two Shiite homes and killed 21 men in front of their relatives, police said Saturday, as Vice President Dick Cheney sought Saudi Arabia's help in calming Iraq after an especially violent week.

The capital remained under a 24-hour curfew two days after suspected Sunni insurgents killed 215 people in Baghdad's main Shiite district with a combination of bombs and mortars.

Another 87 people were killed or found dead in sectarian violence across Iraq Friday.

Be aware how our mainstream news outlets are going to be following middle-east diplomacy on this war. As we ask more and more countries to help "problem solve" the shiites and the Sunni's will continue to kill each other for their own revenge. Did we overestimate the minds of the people we were there to liberate from Hussein? I'm beginning to think so.

Meanwhile our complicity in a civil war comes to the fore with Al-Sadr claiming we are fighting for the Sunni's.

BAGHDAD - An aide to radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has accused US troops of aligning themselves with Sunni Arab rebels to attack Iraq's majority community.

"It is clear that there is a collaboration between US forces and Baathists. There is evidence of that," said Sahib al-Amiri Saturday, secretary general of the Martyrs of Allah, a Shiite religious body linked to Sadr's movement.

Yes that's their way of saying, "Thanks for the help, ya'll."

It's a CIVIL WAR and I say Let Them Fight.

Curfew imposed-click for video
When the people of a country split into two different factions and begin fighting over their opposing views, it's called a civil war. Various politicians and "spin doctors" (professional liars) have been consistently denying that Iraq is engaged in a civil war. Instead they call it an "insurgency", whatever the hell that is, and by using that word, imply that the combatants are not native Iraqis.

Well then, what do you call THIS? [**UPDATED**-Joe S.] or THIS?

"BAGHDAD - It was terror Thursday in Baghdad as suicide car bombs and mortar attacks shook the very foundations of Sadr City killing at least 144 people and leaving more than 230 injured, police confirmed.

The Shia-run health ministry was an easy target as insurgents aimed rocket propelled grenades and machine guns. Only the intervention of US helicopters and ground forces prevented this attack from escalating sharply. Around were wounded in the Health ministry attack.

This attack was apparently the cue as well-coordinated suicide bombers and mortars struck at various places at 3pm (12pm GMT) in the Iraqi capital. The first attack took place in a vegetable market in Sadr City.

There was chaos in the street as Shia residents began hurling abuses and started attacking Sunnis. Sadr City, which has been targeted in recent months, is the stronghold of Shia cleric and militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr." (Note that muslim preachers are also generals.)

Scan back up to the underlined part about intervening US forces.

Let this sink in. Our troops are taking sides in a civil war.

We are attacking the Sunnis that are attacking the Shiites. Specifically the Shiite terrorists of that insane extremist, Moqtada al-Sadr, who has been directly responsible for the deaths of a lot of our boys.

Yes, I know, the idea is to stop both sides from fighting and give the government a chance to take control. The same government that is now embracing Syria, which is mostly Sunni. No doubt a deal is being made for the Syrians to control the Iraqi Sunnis. In exchange for what? One thing is for sure, all the blood our people are spilling over there will not be repaid with an Iraq democracy.

It's pretty clear now what our government hopes to achieve there and why we're not squawking about Syrias involvement. The Sunni minority in Iraq used to rule with Saddam. Now the majority Shiites are in power and want to "cleanse" the Sunnis, the "insurgents" who are fighting back. So if the Syrians can control the Sunnis by guaranteeing them a fair share of government and if al Sadr can then be brought into the fold, since all he's killing people for is to gain power for himself anyway, a sort of peace can be reached. We're trying to keep things from completely exploding until the Arabs, in their own slow, self-serving, brick-headed way, hopefully finally manage to reach an agreement that will satisfy them all and allow us to leave.

The problem is there's no guarantee on this and we aren't dealing with very sane people. They aren't reasonable and not one will give up his greed for power for the sake of his country. None of them are patriotic. Islam doesn't allow patriotism.

An Iraqi mourns the death of his relatives.
The only possible outcome of this is the only one there ever was to begin with. Once Saddams iron grip was gone, the grab for power began. It will continue until the area is either consolidated by a new dictator or divided up by various war lords. Our presence there may help shape the outcome but it will not fully determine it, and the terrible price in lives and cash that we're paying for it isn't worth the oil.

We should withdraw to our bases there and let the Arabs sort it out, because that's what they've made plenty clear to us they're insisting on doing anyway. Afterward we'll be there to keep them in check. Makes sense to me.
